According to heise.de a new version of the MyDoom virus is rapidly spreading. The original of MyDoom put too great a strain on several search engines in July 2004. According to anti-virus experts the new version now distributes its query between a greater number of searchengines.

Like previous versions, the virus spreads via email in an executable attachment. Once the attachment is executed the virus opens a backdoor for spamware and other malicious software. MyDoom collects valid emails address by querying search engines, which had originally caused the search engine overloads in July 2004.

A number of anti virus vendors have rated the new version medium to high risk.

It is recommended to update antiv-virus software immediately and to use further protective measures like installation of firewalls, and email filtering packets. The virus still requires human action to be executed, so beware of opening suspicious attachments.
