The single European patent, long awaited by businesses and researchers worldwide, seems to have come one step closer to realisation, reports Intellectual Property Watch, although the Commission was only able to agree to "a hamonised court system for patent lawsuits". This step might spark new discussions about a harmonised patent system under which a patent granted in one EU country would be valid in the entire community. One of the main problems of the current system are the costs involved in the translation of patents into all 23 EU languages. For translators specializing in patent translation this means, however, a huge loss of income. Yet as has been outlined in the article, agreement from all member states will hardly be reached in the near future. More information about the current situation can be found at IP-Watch. |
