RedHerring.com recently published an article on IBM's MASTOR technology, a real-time machine translation solution currently in use by U.S. Forces in Iraq. Author Eydie Cubarrubia compares the PDA-device that provides Arabic-English translation in real time to Star Trek's universal translator of Star Trek. The MASTOR software was recently presented at IBM's special labs? day held in San Jose. Partially due to innovations in machine translation the company IBM's latest earnings call reported a 12 percent increase in earnings and sales (US$ 26.3 billion). According to IBM executives, RedHerring.com reports, among the new trends to watch over the next five years is real-time translation. While MASTOR is not yet foolproof, the device already shows impressive results. MASTOR listens to a speaker, lets him or her select the correct print transcription, then immediately translates the phrase into a different language. A similar system called TALES can search for topics on websites that are not in a user?s native language and translate the contents.
