According to an article published on businessweek.com, the demand for translation and interpreting services is booming. Author Karen E. Klein writes in the article that roughly 50 million people living in the U.S. speak speak a language other than English. "As a result, there's an enormous demand for bilingual skills in today's job market," Nataly Kelly, a former court interpreter and and the author of a book, "Telephone Interpreting: A Comprehensive Guide to the Profession", is cited. A key to success is to get proof of language proficiency,e.g. by taking certification test and membership in professional associations like the American Translators Assn., a professional group with nearly 10,000 members. The ATA also offers a certification program for document translation. Rather unrealistic seems the author's assumption that "Document translating can be done in the evenings or during your children's school hours and can be suspended when needed if a child is sick or needs your attention." Most language professionals will agree that translation is a full-time job, and that clients not only rely on the translator's quality but on his/her ability to meet deadlines.
