The BBC yesterday reported that UK spends around £/GBP 100 million (148m EUR/US$ 197) on public languages services. In detail, local authorities spend around £/GBP 25million, the judicial systems £/GBP 31m. The majority of costs is generated by translation and interpreting services for the National Healthcare System (NHS). A spokesman of government responded to the BBC report: "We do recognise that there is an issue here which we need to look at." As the Guardian Unlimited reports, for the court system alone this represents a 300% rise over the last five years. According to Phil Woolas, Communities Minister, in order to tackle the problem of rising costs the "public services need to give far greater priority to promoting social cohesion and shared values rather than supporting separateness and we are examining the issue of translation in this context."
