In a press release Lionbridge Technologies, Inc, worlds largest language service provider (see Ranking of Top 20 Translation Companies by CommonSenseAdvisory), announced that it has secured a new, four-year program with the Courts Services of Ireland, one of the largest interpretation programs in Ireland. With the new program, Lionbridge will provide onsite interpreters for court-based interpretation services including the interpretation of sworn testimony by defendants and witnesses, submissions by lawyers, and judges' rulings, and will support as many as 200 languages. The contract awarded by the Courts Service was issued via public tender and now positions Lionbridge as the sole provider of interpretation services to the organization. Using Lionbridge's portal, clients can submit interpretation projects, search for resources and information, and manage their interpretations program online. "Working with Lionbridge, the Courts Service will be able to effectively manage the influx of new nationalities and languages into Ireland. From refugees to sickness entitlements, we need to communicate across hundreds of languages," said John Mahon, procurement manager, Courts Service. "When a foreign national applies for asylum in Ireland, it is critical we ensure they understand their legal position, understand the forms, know what they are entitled to, and what they might be signing. The service that Lionbridge provides is far more important than merely verbal translations. It is the core enabler of our commitment to provide the highest level of service and communications with all people in our court system." The Courts Service was established in 2001 to manage the courts and provide services to and for the judges, and to provide other services relating to courts administration, to transfer certain property to the service, to make provision for the staffing of the service, and to provide for related matters, including the proper provision of interpreters for the non-English speaking people affected by the courts. "This new contract to provide the Courts Service with its Interpretation Service is yet another significant win for Lionbridge," said Sherif Gayed, director of Interpretations, Ireland & UK, Lionbridge. "With Lionbridge's deep interpretations and language expertise and our broad pool of resources across hundreds of languages, we will ensure the long-term success of this business partnership." The Lionbridge Interpretation Division secured its first contract in 2003 with the Department of Justice, which is the single largest purchaser of interpretation services in Ireland. With this new Irish Courts Service program, Lionbridge is now the single largest provider of interpretation services in Ireland.
