The Goethe-Institute informs that as part of the build-up to the 2006 football world cup in Germany, the London-branch of the German organisation, whose mission is to promote German language and culture, opened up a literary translation competition. "We know that many of our library members are practising translators, and many school pupils and university students have to learn translation skills. The Institute itself is actively involved in promoting the translation of German literature into English, for example through the journal new books in german," the webiste informs. The competition is open to UK-residents, a formal translation qualification is not required. Deadline for the submission of translations is 10 April 2006. The first prize will be a weekend for 2 in Leipzig, (babelport.com's home town) - including flight, hotel and a varied cultural programme. The second prize is a 100£ book token for the European bookshop and the third prize will include 6 bottles of German "Sekt". More information: Goethe-Insitute London |
