A scotsman.com article informs that a Gaelic spell checker has been launched containing more than half-a-million words. The software tool can be downloaded free of charge. It's handling is similar to that of a standard English spell checker. The European Language Initiative (TELI) project - Pròiseact an Dearbhair - spent almost three years to complete the tool and finally delivered it with twice as many words as expected. TELI also produced the official English and Gaelic dictionary for the Scottish Parliament. Scottish Education minister Peter Peacock points out that the tool shall help to foster a future for the Gaelic language in the computer age: "Gaelic has a proud history and we want it to have a flourishing future," he is cited. The costs for the developing the software totalled at £105,500, with funding provided by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Executive Education Department. The Microsoft Corporation also provided US$ 23,000 in search technologies. Source: The Scotsman |
