The Western Herald recently reported that Western Michigan University faculty member Dr. Peter Krawutschke has been elected as the new president of the Federation of International Translators, an international association which represents the interests of more than 60,000 translators on all five continents. Krawutschke will hold his position for three years. He intents to work with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the African Academy of Languages to create translator associations on the African continent and hopes to increase the number of FIT members in China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines, the newspaper writes. Past presidents of FIT have come from Paris, Rome, Montreal and Melbourne. Krawutschke is only the second North American-based president in the past 53 years.
