Malaysia-based Linguamatix Sdn Bhd, a company specialising in the development of computer translation systems, yesterday announced the launch of LinguaWeb, an online trial of a high-speed English-Malay translation system based on the company's proprietary LinguaBASE technology.

According to the press release, LinguaWeb allows users to conduct real-time translation and searching of the whole Internet in Malay. For a limited time the service will be freely available (www.linguamatix.com/linguaweb).

LinguaWeb is based upon the company's core Intellectual Property and translation engine, LinguaBASE, a novel structured-network-pattern database platform. In recent testing, LinguaWeb was shown to translate between English and Malay at the rate of 500,000 words per minute, the press release informs.

Commercial translation systems for other languages generally are limited to a rate of 5,000 words per minute. The speed of Linguamatix's technology enables real-time translation of millions of webpages a day.

In terms of translation quality, the company specifically notes "that computer translation systems are not designed to replace professional human translators but they are particularly useful for gisting purposes."
