Yesterday, the German news channel N24 reported, that IBM has developed a software for real-time translation of spoken language. The program called "Mastor" is able to understand spoken Mandarin and reproduce content in spoken English.

Although a prototype already exists, marketable products still need to be developed. The company is now working on improving the recognition rate, which is at the moment at around 60 to 70 per cent, reports the German computer magazine "PC Mag".

However, "Mastor" is already capable of 'understanding' the meaning of a sentance and produces translations of the basis of this understanding. This technology is already being used in voice control software. "It is far from being perfect but the future will be great," IBM developer David Nahamoo is cited by N24.

With the enhancements of such technologies the Star Trek like universal translator projected by Walter R. Hunziker might become reality in the not so far away future.
